Camp GTA is a vibrant inner city camp that provides youth in the Trinity-Spadina area with barrier-free access to recreational and skill development summer camp experiences that may not be otherwise available to them. Camp GTA is part of a larger network of free summer camps offered across the GTA as part of the Toronto District School Board’s Focus on Youth and Boys 2 Men programming, and is made possible in large part due to the support of Friends of Community Schools, an organization that supports children’s entitlements and community use of schools. A key component of the summer camp is its Nutrition Program that combines a healthy snack and lunch with water or juice, which for many is their healthiest or only complete meal of the day.
Over the past 6 years, the camp has grown to be a focal point of the community and is a trusted and reliable resource for parents, caregivers and children. This year, the camp serves 195 children and youth including 30 Leaders in Training in sports recreation, international languages, media arts and bike mechanics programming. Equally important, and a key factor in building community capacity for the future, is the employment opportunities the camp provides to youth from the community itself, and the beginning of a cycle where former camp participants are now eligible for hire.
Camp GTA focused on reducing waiting lists to maintain its commitment to barrier-free access and to increase participants’ chances for success in life through summer camp experiences, and is now seeking your support to complete its commitment to nutrition. This year, due to funding challenges and high service demands, Camp GTA is seeking support for funding to continue its Nutrition Program.
To give you a better sense of how you can help, a donation of $60 will ensure that a child has a hot and healthy lunch for 2 weeks, while $210 will provide a child with lunch for the entire summer! Your donation of any amount, large or small, is greatly appreciated and will go a long way towards providing a great summer experience for well-deserving children. To make a donation, please contact Terry at 416-596-2280.
Thank you in advance for helping us make a difference, and for increasing the chances for success in life for some of the most marginalized children and youth.
